In this interview, Dr. Rex Archer, MD, MPH, Director of the Kansas City, Missouri, Health Department and a member of the board of directors of the Public Health Accreditation Board, chats with PHAB Communications Manager Teddi Nicolaus about how partnerships with local organizers can transform communities and create upstream health solutions. The discussion draws on a case report co-authored by Dr. Archer titled “Developing a Culture of Health: Addressing Health Inequities Through a Health Department and Community Organizer Partnership.” The report is featured in a special supplement to the May/June 2018 Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, which highlights the value and impact of health department accreditation. Rex Archer, MD, MPH, serves as Director of Health for the City of Kansas City, Missouri. In addition to serving on the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) of Directors and Chairing PHAB’s Accreditation Improvement Committee, he is a past president of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). Dr. Archer has served on numerous national committees involved with public health. He is responsible for safeguarding the public health of nearly half a million residents and a daytime population of almost one million people.
