Infographic: Prescriber Perceptions of an Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution Program

A new article published in the July 2018 issue of the Journal of Public Health Management & Practice looks at increased efforts to tackle the opioid epidemic by developing more overdose education and naloxone distribution (ONED) programs. Author Alyssa Peckham and colleagues survey prescribers’ attitudes and comfort levels dispensing naloxone, and find that barriers to OEND implementation continue to exist as not all clinicians or practice specialties are comfortable dispensing the drug. Analysis to identify barriers and perform targeted education may allow for enhanced acceptance and greater naloxone dissemination. Dr. Alyssa Peckham

Alyssa M. Peckham is a board-certified psychiatric pharmacist (BCPP) who works as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at Northeastern University and a Clinical Addiction Specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital. She earned a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island, and completed both a PGY1 residency in Pharmacy Practice, and a PGY2 residency in Psychiatry and Addiction at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut. Prior to Northeastern University, Dr. Peckham was an Assistant Professor at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. Her research focuses on use and abuse of prescription medications, with recent publications examining the epidemiology, economics, policy implications, and provider knowledge and attitudes of prescription opioid abuse with or without gabapentin.
