Amelia Burke-Garcia, PhD, MA

Dr. Amelia Burke-Garcia is a health communications expert with over 20 years of experience designing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based public health communication programs. She directs NORC’s Center for Health Communication Science and leads its Digital Strategy and Outreach Program Area, applying rigorous communication science to advance public health impact. Over her career, she has led major national health communication efforts, including the award-winning How Right Now/Qué Hacer Ahora campaign and CDC’s National Influenza Vaccination Campaign. She brings more than a decade of experience studying the role of social media influencers in public health communication and now leads NORC’s Health Communication AI initiative, which is building the evidence base for the effective use of AI in health communication. She is the author of Influencing Health: A Comprehensive Guide to Working with Social Media Influencers and Communicating Through a Pandemic: A Chronicle of Experiences, Lessons Learned, and a Vision for the Future. Recognized by the U.S. Surgeon General and VeryWellHealth, she serves as Board Chair of the national nonprofit Vaccinate Your Family and is a founding member of the Society for Health Communication. She holds degrees from McGill University (BA), Georgetown University (MA), and George Mason University (PhD).
