PHAB’s Impact in 2023

This entry is part 43 of 63 in the series Focus on Accreditation and Innovation

In 2023, PHAB continued its mission to advance and transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure, and innovation. Through tools and resources, the national accreditation program, implementation of the Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG), and other strategic initiatives, PHAB has been agile in responding to the needs of health departments and strengthening public health infrastructure.

Last year, PHAB was selected as one of three national partners to receive a grant award from the CDC to support state, local, and territorial health department efforts to modernize data systems, recruit and retain a skilled public health workforce, and address public health infrastructure needs. In 2023, PHAB worked collaboratively with partners, health departments and other organizations to implement key activities of the grant, provide technical assistance to grant recipients, and develop new resources for the field.

PHAB also began work on the design of PH-LIFT (Leveraging Infrastructure for Transformation), a one-stop-shop for health departments to access the data and tools to support their work. It will collect, compile, and visualize/report data across various sources to drive health department action to transform public health systems.

Other key highlights of 2023 include:

We are in a unique and potentially transformative moment in public health. PHAB’s efforts today can ensure that our public health system is equitable, responsive, and able to protect health and promote well-being of communities for future generations.
