Maternal and Child Health Podcast with Dr. Lindsey Yates

JPHMP Editor-in-chief Lloyd Novick speaks with Dr. Lindsey Yates about working together to improve maternal health.
In this episode of The Editor’s Podcast, recorded during National Black Maternal Health Week, I spoke with Dr. Lindsay Yates, one of the editors of The Practical Playbook III: Working Together to Improve Maternal Health. The Practical Playbook III is a guide for researchers, community activists, and advocates of maternal health, which offers practical tools and strategies to improve inequities in maternal health. This new third edition aims to describe the need and opportunities for improving maternal health through multi-sector collaborations. It highlights examples of effective cross-sector partnerships that are making real improvements in health outcomes for maternal health populations and offers practical tools and strategies for practitioners working in this space.
Lindsey Yates, PhD, MPH, is an assistant professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is a health equity researcher, whose work intersects family planning, maternal and child health, and implementation science. She has led and supported various projects using qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the health system factors that influence equitable access to family planning services, specifically long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and abortion care. Dr. Yates is also invested in working with communities to identify and implement solutions to address inequities in maternal and child health, particularly inequities that disproportionately impact Black women, birthing people and children. She has experience supporting Title V teams and local health department teams to advance equity, using implementation science and other tools to help teams clarify their approach to achieving equitable outcomes. Dr. Yates works with both national and local agencies, and scholars from various academic disciplines to curate and share best practices for MCH partners.
