In the Health Administration Section, we strive to create a mentoring culture that promotes the professional development of our members. This webinar is the first of a two-part series designed to provide information in a flexible format congruent with the Health Care Administration’s approach to mentoring.

For some time, the absence of financial literacy among public health practitioners has been a matter of concern because it affects the quality of managerial decisions about the allocation of scarce government and community resources. You have to know revenue sources and allocation priorities to be an effective public health manager/administrator.

In the first of a two-part series on public health finance, three public health department administrators discuss their positions and the importance of financial literacy in public health practice. Examples of how their training in finance improved their resource allocation decisions are provided. The webinar concludes with observations on how to increase financial awareness, the topic of the second webinar in this two-part series, available for viewing on JPHMP Direct after September 14.

Dr. Brenda Stevenson Marshall holds an MPH in policy planning and regulation (UC Berkeley), a MAE in applied economics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a PHD in Health Services Organization and Policy from the University of Michigan, SPH, Ann Arbor, MI). She is a health policy analyst, health economist and health strategist with employment and research experience in public and private health systems. She is the recipient of numerous awards in recognition of her work within the Health Administration Section. APHA acknowledged her mentoring and senior leadership role within the organization nationally in 2020 with the Lyndon Haviland Mentoring Award.
