Steven Giles, PhD
Dr. Steven Giles is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Wake Forest University. He is a prevention interventionist and health communication scholar with more than 30 years of experience dedicated to understanding how communication shapes health attitudes and behaviors. Dr. Giles uses health communication theory to address behavior change across a wide range of health-related concerns, including substance use, obesity, and body image.
His research spans substance use prevention, media-based health interventions, body image and disordered eating, and family-based strategies for promoting healthy eating and reducing childhood obesity. He has evaluated school-based prevention programs, designed media interventions to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, and examined thin-promoting social norms on college campuses. His work also explores family-based approaches to fostering lifelong healthy habits.
