Journal of Public Health Management & Practice founder and editor-in-chief Lloyd F. Novick, MD, MPH, along with co-editors Carole Novick, BA, and Cynthia Morrow, MD, MPH, signed copies of a new compilation of public health case studies released at the American Public Health Association annual conference in Atlanta on November 5, 2017. The new text, JPHMP’s 21 Public Health Case Studies on Policy & Administration (LWW; first edition, 2017) features actual scenarios of public health professionals facing and overcoming myriad challenges and the policy and administrative interventions that made each success story possible. The editors carefully selected 21 cases based on a broad range of real events that will appeal to those already working in or studying public health. Each case tells a “story” with characters facing obstacles that test and challenge at every turn. The case study method itself is a proven strategy for engaging readers and students by allowing them to experience real-world challenges vicariously, questioning why decisions were made and how they might respond themselves if faced with similar situations. In addition to tables and exhibits that accompany detailed narratives, students will benefit from questions designed to facilitate discussion (and possibly even debate) at the end of each case.
