Dr. Paul Erwin
Paul Campbell Erwin, MD, DrPH, is Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Erwin earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of the South (Sewanee), his medical degree from the UAB School of Medicine, a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University, and a doctorate in public health from the University of North Carolina. He is board certified in internal medicine, and public health and preventive medicine, and is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine.
Prior to his appointment as dean at the UAB School of Public Health, Dr. Erwin was a professor and department head for School of Public Health at the University of Tennessee for 11 years, where he established the department in order to grow the accredited public health program. Before that academic appointment, Dr. Erwin served with the Tennessee Department of Health for 16 years, with 12 years as the director of the East Tennessee Regional Health Office, overseeing 15 county health departments, mostly in rural Appalachia.
He is an associate editor of the American Journal of Public Health and a member of the editorial boards for Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba Review and the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice. Dr. Erwin is a leader in establishing formal Academic Health Department collaboratives between academia and public health practice partners. His research interests include evidence-based public health and public health services and systems research. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and served as the lead editor (with co-editor Dr. Ross Brownson) of the fourth edition of the textbook, Scutchfield and Keck’s Principles of Public Health Practice.
