Infographic: Improving Community Health through a Produce Prescription Initiative

In a new article published in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, my colleagues and I describe a mixed-methods examination of the impact of the Partnerships to Improve Community Health Produce Prescription Initiative in northeastern North Carolina. This initiative combined produce vouchers with public health-based nutrition education programs such as the Diabetes Prevention Program and education for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). 

Although redemption rates were low (18%), qualitative data indicated that the produce prescription initiative had positive impacts on participants’ local fruit and vegetable purchasing and consumption. Moving forward, the program has been working with local food retailers to connect with their communities to increase redemption rates and ultimately improve fruit and vegetable intake.
