Pay to Play? Author Interview with Dr. Amy Eyler

Participation in high school sports can impact the physical and mental health of students and influence other positive social and economic outcomes. To maintain sports programs amidst school budget deficits, many districts are implementing sports participation fee policies. A new article by Dr. Amy Eyler, et al, looks at state laws and regulations related to high school sports participation fees. We spoke with Dr. Eyler recently about school sports participation fees, waivers available to students who can’t afford paying to play, and much more. Read “Pay to Play? Amy A. Eyler, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Brown School of Social Work and is the Deputy Director of the Prevention Research Center in St. Louis. Dr. Eyler’s main research interests are physical activity, childhood obesity prevention, community policy and environmental interventions, and evaluation. She the Past Chair of the physical activity section of the American Public Health Association, a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and is a Certified Health Education Specialist. She is the author to over 80 peer-reviewed publications. Her book Prevention, Policy, and Public Health was published in 2016 and her new book on physical activity interventions will be out in 2019.
